Hello quilty friends! It’s been awhile! Any of you who know me know that I’ve been riding the Scrappy Train recently. Delving into my stash bins and making scrap quilts. What’s even more amazing is that I’ve been finishing them!
This quilt started when I realized I couldn’t fit anything else into my 1 1/2″ scrap bin. I decided to make a good old Log Cabin. An oldie but a goodie!! As I was stitching away, I realized that I had several Flying Geese blocks in a similar color scheme that were leftover from another project. They were the perfect size to make Sawtooth Stars in the same size block as my Log Cabins. The Sawtooth Star pattern can be found below. There are many ways to make Flying Geese, I have typed up a simple way, but feel free to use your desired method. You just need to end up with Geese that measure 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.
The Log Cabin block is an 8 1/2″ block, I actually used the measurements from one of my favorite quilt books called the Big Book of Favorite Scrap Quilts. This is a great book, by the way, and I highly recommend it! If you’d like to order a copy, you can do so here https://littlefoot.net/product/big-book-of-favorite-scrap-quilts/
Anyhoo, on page 85 there is a great pattern for a simple log cabin. This is what I used.
Below I have typed up the most basic instructions for the Log Cabin. If you need detailed instructions I do recommend a book, like the one pictured above. However if you are familiar with basic piecing, these instructions should be helpful.
My quilt measures about 65″ x 65″….I probably should’ve made it bigger, but you know how that goes!! I was done! Hope this will inspire you to dig through your stash!
Have a great week!
xoxo, Sarah
