Courthouse Steps from a Layer Cake

October 24, 2022

Hello friends! Recently I fell in love with a new Layer Cake that came into the shoppe…every day, I’d pick it up and think “what can I do with this?” It wasn’t long before the idea for a Courthouse Steps Log Cabin popped to mind. The thought of cutting all the pieces from a 10″ square intrigued me. After a bit of sketching I figured the math out, and this is my result!! I’m so happy with this little quilt. The blocks are rectangle, which I love, but you could make them square by adding one more log to each side. Scroll down to download the free pattern I put together. I use the term ‘pattern’ loosely…..it’s only one sheet with basic instructions! But it does give you the cutting instructions for the layer cake.

Quick photo for now….I do plan on adding a couple of borders to this. These blocks measure 9 1/2″ x 11 1/2″, so the top measures 45″ x 66″ as is. This is what I made with one layer cake and a couple yards of background fabric. There were a few prints from the layer cake that I chose not to use, and I could’ve added more prints, but I’m happy with the size it is.

This of course is a great stash buster too, or maybe you have a layer cake laying around that you just haven’t known what to do with. Hope this inspires you!!

xoxo,

Sarah
